Process

Primed, stretched and painted by hand

Ilse Varen paints large abstract canvases about the northern coast: the light in early spring, the colour of wet stone, the long pause before a storm. Each painting starts outdoors and is finished in the harbour studio in Lunevik, in thin layers that keep the colour clear.
